Top 5 Best Places To Live In Southeast Michigan
If you’re looking for a great place to live in Southeast Michigan, you’re in the right spot. In this guide, I’ll share my top five best places to live based on livability, local rankings, amenities, housing affordability, and real resident feedback. Whether you’re moving for work, family, or a lifestyle change, these Southeast Michigan communities offer some of the best quality of life the state has to offer.
I’m Andrew McManamon, a licensed Michigan Realtor born and raised right here in the mitten. Let’s dive in.
What Exactly Is Southeast Michigan?
Before getting into the top five, it’s important to define where Southeast Michigan actually is. This region typically includes seven counties: Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne (but you'll see it differently no matter what Michigan map you look at. For example on my explore communities page, the regions are grouped much more simply). Some sources also include Jackson County depending on the context.
To put this into perspective, three of these seven counties were featured on HomeSnacks’ “Top 10 Best Counties to Live in Michigan” list—an impressive feat considering Michigan has 83 counties total.
This area is known for its diversity in housing, vibrant downtowns, strong job markets, and easy access to both Detroit’s urban energy and Michigan’s outdoor beauty.

#5 – The Grosse Pointes

Let’s kick things off with The Grosse Pointes — a collection of five upscale suburbs east of Detroit, along the shores of Lake St. Clair. For this list, we’ll focus on Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Woods, and Grosse Pointe Park, as they’re ranked similarly in livability and amenities.
Grosse Pointe Farms
- Population: ~9,500
- Median Home Value: ~$355,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,400
- Median Household Income: ~$140,000
- Homeownership Rate: 93%
Rankings:
- #5 of 619 Best Places to Retire in Michigan
- #7 for Best Public Schools
- #13 Best Suburbs to Buy a Home
Grosse Pointe Woods
- Population: ~15,000
- Median Home Value: ~$244,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,400
- Median Household Income: ~$104,000
- Homeownership Rate: 90%
Grosse Pointe Park
- Population: ~11,000
- Median Home Value: ~$358,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,100
- Median Household Income: ~$115,000
- Homeownership Rate: 73%
All three communities share a crime rating of B- (Niche.com) and feature highly rated schools, waterfront parks, and charming shopping districts. Residents enjoy an active lifestyle with access to marinas, movie theaters, golf, local shops, and one of the most vibrant nightlife scenes outside of Detroit.
Local Insight:
These neighborhoods are known for their small-town charm, tree-lined streets, and strong sense of community. However, property values here are above average due to their lakeside location and proximity to downtown Detroit.
#4 – Northville & Novi
Coming in at number four is a duo that’s close in location but worlds apart in atmosphere: Northville and Novi. Both are located in western Oakland County, and while some residents may not think of them in the same sentence, their shared border and high livability make them equally desirable.
Novi
- Population: ~60,000
- Median Home Value: ~$322,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,350
- Median Household Income: ~$110,000
Ranking:
- #7 of 815 Best Places to Live in Michigan
- #7 Best Suburbs to Live In
Novi is a thriving suburban hub known for its shopping (Twelve Oaks Mall), job opportunities, and modern neighborhoods. It’s home to top employers like Toyota, Magna International, and Ascension Providence Hospital, making it ideal for professionals seeking convenience and opportunity.
Northville
- Population: ~6,000
- Median Home Value: ~$331,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,200
- Median Household Income: ~$114,000
- Homeownership Rate: 82%
Ranking:
- #1 for Best Public Schools in Michigan
- #2 for Best Places to Raise a Family
Northville, by contrast, feels like a cozy, historic small town—with cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and family-owned restaurants. The community’s commitment to supporting local businesses stands out, especially after Northville transformed Main Street into a pedestrian plaza during the pandemic to help local restaurants thrive.
Local Insight:
If you want a balance between old-town charm and access to modern amenities, the Northville–Novi area is tough to beat. Northville has a slower pace and family focus, while Novi delivers energy, growth, and shopping convenience.
#3 – Troy.35.png)
Troy is one of Southeast Michigan’s largest and most diverse cities—and it’s easy to see why it ranks #2 of 815 Best Places to Live in Michigan (Niche.com). With a population of over 80,000, it offers an excellent balance of urban convenience and suburban comfort.
- Median Home Value: ~$301,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,200
- Median Household Income: ~$101,000
Troy’s highly rated public schools, low crime rate, and strong job market (with major employers like Flagstar Bank, Kelly Services, and Magna Powertrain) make it one of the top spots for families and professionals. Located just 25 minutes from Detroit, it’s close enough to enjoy the city’s attractions but far enough to maintain a suburban feel.
Local Insight:
Troy’s residents describe it as a clean, diverse, and welcoming community. The area offers excellent shopping at Somerset Collection, countless parks, and top-rated restaurants. Housing prices are competitive, but appreciation trends have remained strong over the past decade.
#2 – Bloomfield Township
Known for its beautiful homes, large lots, and proximity to everything, Bloomfield Township ranks high in nearly every livability category.
- Population: ~42,000
- Median Home Value: ~$428,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,350
- Homeownership Rate: 90%
Ranking:
- #3 Best Places to Live in Michigan
- #3 Best Places to Raise a Family
Residents enjoy a quiet suburban environment filled with golf courses, art galleries, historic landmarks, and parks. Bloomfield’s location near Troy, Birmingham, and West Bloomfield provides convenient access to major employers, restaurants, and high-end shopping.
Local Insight:
Bloomfield Township is known for its safety, strong schools (especially the Bloomfield Hills district), and desirable commute times to both Detroit and Ann Arbor. Homes tend to be on the pricier side, but the long-term value and community appeal are unmatched.
#1 – Ann Arbor
No surprise here—Ann Arbor consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in Michigan and the United States.
- Population: ~120,000
- Median Home Value: ~$323,000
- Median Rent: ~$1,200
Ranking:
- #2 Best Public Schools in America (Niche.com)
- #6 Best Cities to Live in the U.S.
Home to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor offers a mix of small-town charm and big-city culture. From art fairs and farmers markets to tech startups and healthcare innovation, the city has an energy all its own. Its thriving downtown, diverse food scene, and constant stream of events make it an incredible place for students, professionals, and families alike.
Local Insight:
Ann Arbor’s biggest challenge? Affordability. The same demand that makes it desirable also pushes home prices higher than average for the state. But with excellent schools, healthcare, walkability, and culture, many find it worth the premium.
Affordability & Final Thoughts
While all five areas offer incredible quality of life, the main downside is affordability. Southeast Michigan’s top-ranked suburbs tend to come with higher price tags—but that’s often the cost of strong schools, safety, and a thriving local economy.

At the end of the day, your “best place” depends on what matters most—whether it’s schools, commute times, outdoor recreation, or lifestyle.
